Chapter 1
When does the story begin?

When Kino wakes up at dawn and hears the beautiful song of the morning.

Which characters are introduced?

Kino (the main character), his wife Juana and his child Coytito, Kino´s brother Juan Thomás and his family: wife Apolonia and 4 children, the beggers, the doctor and his servant, people from the neighbourhood

What role do the songs have? What are they like?

They had a important role, because they create more emotion to the text, one can feel the soft and warm embrace of the beautiful morning while listening to how Steinbeck describes the song and feel just like on would be there with Kino. The songs also create kind of this fake reality, they reflect the events in Kino´s life.

What are some of the contrasts presented in the chapter?

The contrast between the soft and beautiful morning and the terrified feeling of the parents when they realize a scorpion is about to bite their child. There are also contrast between the social situations of the characters, the doctor is of a so called “higher” social class while Kino and the others are of a “lower” class. Also the scorpion-situation shows this set up of human versus nature. Individual versus society is introduced too.

What role do the neighbours have?

They´re the first ones to realize that everything isn´t right, first ones to be there when the scorpion bites Coytito. They are there to help, maybe too eagerly sometimes.
Still, in front of Kino´s shame they know to leave him alone, which is bot wise and a bit stupid thing to too. They´ve been there and society lets one to suffer alone.
